As Brits around the world celebrated the Diamond Jubilee, one inland corner of the Costa del Sol managed to pull off a hugely successful event, combined with raising much needed funds for local charities.
The Charity Family Fun Day was held at Lauro Golf Academy last Sunday 3rd June and saw representatives from 17 charity groups take part including the Brownies, PAD and Thomas Leighton, CHAIN, Age Concern, Cudeca, Ray of Light, 4 Paws Adoption, AID, LIVE, Debra, Dental Mavericks, Old War Veterans, Royal British Legion, ARCH, Alzheimers and the Scouts.
By running games and activities such as Hook a Duck, Treasure Hunt, Tombola and selling cupcakes, between them they raised over €1,800 for their own individual registered charities. Another 30 businesses also attended to promote their company or sell products ranging from shoes to home made soaps.
Meanwhile other activities on the day included a traditional sports day for the kids organised by RoundaboutSpain.com, which saw over 140 children register for the various races, a junior putting competition, bouncy castles, face painting, fashion show and a dance display by the Costa All Stars Cheerleading group plus a Wildside Survival workshop. The event was hosted by Heart FM’s Lee Jay and ended with live music from Costa Rock.
Roy Trevor Removals collected three large packing boxes of donated food stuffs on the day which will be donated to the local Caritas (food banks) . The organisers also added a further €450 to this cause from donations and fundraising on the day which they are now hoping to at least double through sponsorship from a local business or supermarket which will allow them to donate a good quantity of food stuffs to local, needy families …. if you can help make this happen please Contact Us .
Although a predominantly British event, families of all nationalities supported the fun day with over 1,000 visitors through gates. The children took full advantage of running freely and safely on the green golf range area. In fact the event was such a huge success there have been calls to make it an annual event.
Organiser, Lisa Sadleir of FamilyLifeinSpain.com said: “We worked really hard to make this a fun packed family day and I think we achieved that judging by the response. The children were entertained and so were the adults. I think we did the Jubilee celebrations proud and we raised money for several charities at the same time. We are already planning ideas for next year …”
