Moving to Spain: How to Get It Right From the Start

Most people who think about moving to Spain start with the same picture in their head. Sunshine. A slower pace. More time outdoors with the family. And honestly, Spain can give you all of that.

But here’s what I’ve seen after more than 30 years of living here and helping families do this properly: the dream is never the problem. The planning is.

I’ve watched people move to Spain full of excitement, only to be back in their home country within two or three years. Not because Spain let them down, but because nobody told them what they actually needed to know before they packed a single box.

You don’t need to learn this the hard way. You just need someone who’s lived it to tell you straight.

Why People are Moving to Spain, and Why It Sometimes Goes Wrong

Every year, thousands of families and retirees make the move. The reasons are almost always the same: a better quality of life, more outdoor time, a culture that genuinely makes space for family, and a pace of life that feels human again.

Spain delivers on all of that. But relocations fail for reasons unrelated to Spain itself and have everything to do with preparation. The pattern is one I’ve seen repeat itself for three decades:

People choose the wrong area for their lifestyle or budget. They underestimate what life actually costs once they’re here. They misjudge the school system and realise too late that they’ve made the wrong choice for their child. They arrive without a proper visa or residency plan and find themselves stuck. Or they simply expect Spain to function like home, and get caught out when it doesn’t.

Every one of these is avoidable. That’s the whole point of getting good guidance before you move, not after.

The Decisions That Shape Your Whole Move to Spain

If you’re serious about this, a handful of decisions will determine whether your move to Spain works or doesn’t. Get these right early, and everything else becomes much easier.

Where You Actually Live

Spain isn’t one place. Coastal living is a completely different experience from inland life. A small Spanish town runs on a different rhythm than a large city. And the difference between an expat-heavy area and a fully Spanish community will shape your day-to-day life more than almost anything else. This is the decision that everything else gets built on, so it deserves real thought, not a guess based on one holiday.

Schools and Education

If you’re moving with children, this is where families either get it right or spend years wishing they had. Your options are international schools, private Spanish schools, or the state system, and each one comes with real trade-offs in cost, language, and how quickly your child settles in. I’ve seen this go wrong more often than almost any other part of the move, and it’s rarely something you can undo easily once your child is enrolled and settled. (Read more about Education in Spain)

What Life Actually Costs

Spain can be affordable. It can also catch you out completely, depending on the choices you make. Housing, school fees if you choose private or international education, healthcare, transport, and ordinary daily expenses all vary enormously by region. The mistake I see most is people assuming Spain is cheap everywhere. It isn’t. It’s affordable in the right place, for the right lifestyle.

Visas and Residency

If you’re not an EU citizen, you cannot move to Spain and sort the paperwork out once you’ve arrived. The main routes are the Non-Lucrative Visa, the Digital Nomad Visa, and work-based residency, each with strict requirements that must be met before you move, not after. Getting this wrong doesn’t just cause delays. It can block your move entirely.

How I Help You Move to Spain Without the Costly Mistakes

I don’t do generic advice. After three decades of living in Spain, I offer guidance based on what actually happens, not what looks good in a brochure.

I work with families with children, professionals and business owners, and retirees planning a long-term move, and my goal is always the same: to help you avoid expensive mistakes and build a life here that genuinely works for you.

I can guide you through any part of Spain, helping you understand which locations realistically fit your lifestyle, budget, and long-term plans. For families relocating to the south, I offer hands-on, on-the-ground support across Málaga and the Costa del Sol, where I have deep local knowledge and trusted contacts. If you’re looking at other regions, I also work with a small number of carefully chosen, trusted partners who provide reliable support where I’m not based myself.

That means you get independent, honest guidance, plus access to people on the ground who know the area, wherever in Spain you decide to settle.

I can be reached via the Contact Me form or via email.

How the Moving to Spain Process Works

Step 1: Initial Consultation and Questionnaire

You complete a detailed questionnaire covering your goals, budget, timeline, and concerns. This lets us both honestly work out whether I’m the right person to help you.

Step 2: A Personalised Plan

Based on what you’ve told me, I’ll confirm whether I can support you, recommend an approach that fits your situation, and outline clear service options. I work with a limited number of clients each month, because proper guidance takes real time and attention.

Step 3: Strategy Call and Plan of Action

Together, we build a clear plan covering the best areas for your needs, your school options if you have children, your property strategy, whether that’s renting or buying, and a realistic timeline. From there, I guide you through each stage of the move itself.

What I Can Help You With

Depending on what you need, support can include area selection across Málaga, the Costa del Sol, Cádiz, and surrounding regions; school research and appointments; property search and viewings; temporary accommodation; and rental negotiation. For property purchases, I provide guidance alongside independent legal support, since that protection matters and I won’t pretend otherwise.

Beyond the move itself, I can help with NIE and residency applications, opening a Spanish bank account, healthcare and insurance, importing a vehicle, relocating pets, and setting up utilities. Every move is different, which is why nothing about my approach is one-size-fits-all.
